Probably largely a matter of what you get used to, also. My first OI is what caused me to discover that I like lower volume boats. Then I took it to extremes with some genuinely low volume yaks (see photo), and came to the same conclusion you. I'd have to call the OI a medium volume cockpit. For those coming from more conventional sea kayak designs, it might feel snug; but a couple spins around the block in a truly tight boat will soon give perspective. My legs and feet have plenty of kickin' room in most boats, a little wiggle room in the OI, and feel pinned in a traditional SOF.

I was a little flip in my reply to the question of tracking. Yes, the OI is a strong tracking boat, and can be challenging to squeeze a turn out of. But one of the OI's most wonderful traits is that it rewards good technique generously. For instance, if you sit flat and try to spin the boat about, you're gonna work your fanny off; but if you do a knee-hang, around she goes, and the more aggressively you lean 'er over the quicker she comes around. I've paddled some kayaks that refuse to respond better no matter how much technique you throw at 'em.

: Actually thinking about my boats, should have asked "how much
: room is there side to side in the bow?". I now have three
: boats that have my heels pressed together to paddle them. Ok for
: a short time, but after awile it's nice to be able to move
: around inside a little. I guess I really like tight fitting
: boats, can't have your cake and eat it too :)
