: Wow, that's insteresting. I never heard that story. So who is
: making Craftsman's stuff now? It seems like they went to heck
: about 10 years ago. They used to have pretty quality stuff and
: now it seems like they are cutting corners to get a lower priced
: product. Ridgid has done a fine job of making a decent-priced
: quality tool. After they made the granite-top table saw I was
: hoping they would further explore the use of granite for us guys
: down here in the tropics where everything rusts, even when
: stored indoors. I like the non-ferrous construction of this saw,
: whatever it's made of, but I hate that my magnetic accessories

The granite Top Table saw was actually made for Ridged by Steel City Tools. I believe they still make the saw for the US market. I think Home Depot was getting out of it due to the cost of the shipping for the table saw, at least that is what I remember reading. That and some of their stores were stacking them too high so it was putting too much weight on the saw itself and breaking the legs and tops.

I picked up one of the granite top saws a couple months ago, it is heavy but it is oh so nice. No more having to worry about rust on the top or it warping on me in the cold/heat cycle in the winter. I got it for a great price and took the time to make sure that the fence and blade was lined up properly, that was the hardest part of the whole build I think.
