Coaming:

The coaming is done much like the frames except it's not make with the braided sleeve. You still need a wood template, it's throw away so cheap ply is the material except the mold is female, the foam is applied to the inside edge of the template and just taped in place. Best to use contact cement to join the two ends to make a smooth joint. This is just a male mold. I use foam pipe insulation, have to look for the cheap stuff, it's the same foam as the backer rod btw. (the expensive foam pipe insulation is too soft a foam, won't hold it's shape as well as the cheap stuff) Once the foam is in place, just lay up your normal schedule of glass/carbon to the foam about 1/3 of the circumference to make a rounded coaming shape. This was designed to be used for SOF boats, but the foam is very easily cut so can be taped in place over a plywood or strip boat as a form too. Since this all curves the layup can be less than it would be for a conventional squared off glass coaming as the curves are much stronger in glass than flat sections would be. Once the resin has set up most of the foam can just be pulled away, it doesn't stick real well and any remaining can be disolved with acetone.
