Many exterior and marine varnishes use finely ground mica in the mixture which reflects the UV rays away and it's really not much more scientific than that. Remember the 50s and 60s when having a natural stained front door on your house was the fad. The problem was that in a year os so, the door was peeling no matter what you used so that look was over quickly. There is no clear coating that really does well in the sun. Considering that fact that boats gets scratched up from use, it works out right that in two or more years the boat needs cosmetic varnishing anyhow so we just renew the UV protection at the same time.
