Actually if you're not cutting really thick stock, a simple home made miter box and a Japanese pull saw works very well and is very safe and cheap. If the stock is very thick you'll run out of blade length. Works ok up to around 3/4" thick stock. Sometimes it's just faster and easier to do it by hand.
