Rob Macks does the same thing on his boats. I use an engineer's 45/45/90 triangle to set the frames to the string, it's light weight and small enough to fit easily between the frames. A small carpenter's square would work too. Normally I rest it on the strongback top and eyeball the frame and the string position by eye (sight from the string to the square and from the frame to the square).
