In Response To: Tools: Shop Smith- good or bad??? (Malcolm Schweizer)

: Hello all,

: Still trying to figure out the best tablesaw solution. I would like
: to know if any of you have experience with the Shop Smith Mark V
: (newer version with speed control dial). I like the concept, but
: I'm not real keen on the tablesaw in that you have to tilt the
: table instead of the arbor- however, I rarely make beveled cuts
: anyway. I mainly need a saw for ripping. Most beveled cuts are
: going to be small crosscuts and I can use a miter saw for those.
: How well does this thing rip? I like the idea of the lathe/drill
: press/sander/tablesaw all taking up one small space. If the
: thing can rip fairly well and if it is accurate and easy to
: adjust accurate angles I might consider one.

Too bad you're forced to endure life in the tropics :-) Here in OH, Craigslist always has a handful, on sale for a fraction of the sticker price. Look into used if that's the way you decide to go. A lot of the sellers here are retirees selling homes to move to condos, or guys who realized they haven't used them in years.
