Actually this was for the gunwales on a skin-on-frame kayak, but I do plan to use the stuff for my next wood surfboard project because I was very pleased with the workability of it. I have built a cedar strip kayak so I can give you some feedback on the two woods. It is pretty much the same weight and very similar characteristics of cedar. It does have a bit more tendency to want to tear along the grain. It also typically doesn't have as even color as cedar. It can go from yellow to pink to brown in one board. It seems to wick moisture so store it carefully. It works very easily just like cedar. Again you have to watch tear-out and splintering, but with sharp tools it should be a pleasure to work with.

I'm also currently building a wood surfboard out of balsa and mahogany and I think for the next one (a 12' paddleboard) I may use some cypress. It's one of the few lightweight woods I can get locally.
