Have now got the correct answer to my question. After paddling for the summer, the areas that were sanded through have lost all the varnish and the glass is exposed 
. It lookes awful and will require sanding down past the varnish and re-application of epoxy. So the short answer; If you sand through the epoxy to the glass, you MUST reapply epoxy. R
