If only a little bit of weave is showing, it can be hidden with varnish. If it's sanded too deep into the weave, then the weave will be hard to hide with varnish. You can always do a little test area with varnish and see if the results are to your liking. If your not satisfied, then just remove the varnish and recoat with epoxy.
