Material: Hatch rubber/foam/weather stripping?

My CLC kit came with black, self-adhesive, high-density foam weather stripping that's 3/8 in. thick and 3/4 in. wide. First, it should be 1/2 inch wide. Second, even when I crudely trimmed the width, it was too dense to settle down far enough to have the hatch look good.

I went to Lowe's and got some gray self-adhesive weather strip of 3/8 in. by 1/2 in. dimensions. It's lower density, and the hatches settled down nicely (using hidden bungee system with appropriate tension). BUT, I found that they absorbed a lot of water. On testing, I found the material provided by CLC absorbs little water.

So, the question is: What works best, and where can I get it?

Thanks
