S&G: using non-marine grade ply for hull

I'm about to start building my first kayak and today I went to price Okoume Ply. The price is for a 1/4" 4'x8' sheet is $12.61, but it's not marine grade. I looked the edges over and did not see any voids in the core. Because of the cheap price, I really want to use wood but I'm worried that it's a disaster waiting to happen.
Is it always a bad idea to use non-marine grade ply, or do some of you think it will work out ok?

thanks
