When I built my S&G, I left the stitching in place. Just snipped off the copper wire flush with the exterior of the panel, sanded it if needed, to make it smooth, and fiberglassed over that. You end up with a copper accent in each hole. Looks a bit like a small brad head. I like the look. People assume they are small nail heads.
