I used "Spar" Marine varnish from Bunnings, then whilst I was there I saw a cheaper Marine varnish by BoondAL (Monocell ?). That says it is not good for below waterline use; as I am only in the water for a few hours at a time I chose that and it seems to have worked out well for me. It is about $32 AUD for a liter. BTW For my SoF I used a LOT more varnish than i had budgeted for!
I bought my nylon from the USA it still saved me about $70 AUD! I was recommended some high power "filter" material nylon. It is great ( the high power stuff)as i have seen it on my friends SoF but mine works well too.

: G'day Darren,
: I have searched high & low for sources of ballistic nylon here in Oz,
: without a lot of success. I was looking for White to use on a Geenland
: boat I am building but, from memory, all I could find was Black.
: Bradmill Outdoor manufacture a 1000 Denier Cordura nylon
: (www.bradmilloutdoor.com.au/cordura.htm) of 300-350gsm that might work and
: it's reported to be waterproof. Coating may not be required to make it
: waterproof, only to make it smooth.
: Ricky Richards
: (http://www.rickyrichards.com.au/products-detail.php?cpath=1_4_16) have
: 1000 Denier nylon and 1000 Denier Cordura nylon also.
: Nuplex 'Revathane Clear' (www.nuplexconstruction.com.au) is a single-pack
: polyurethane that comes recommended by SOF builders in New Zealand. It is
: solvent-based & rather nasty to work with apparently, so maybe
: Nuplex's water-based 'Aquaclear' might be an alternative.
: Hope this helps !
: Regards,
: Phil.
: Adelaide.
