my $.02 is to research a particular design well given the time and expense involved in the construction. Start with the folks at watertribe.com or http://www.baloghsaildesigns.com/ for feedback on designs that have been developed from rigorous use. My recollection of the CLC outriggers is that they are kind of a highly rockered Pax20 hull shape,,very sharp entry with little volume. I don't know if that's an ideal outrigger shape or not, maybe it provides some lateral resistance. My gut sense is that it makes for herky/jerky motion in waves the one time I used it on a Chesapeak 17. The position of the arms pretty much commits the mast in one position. Again I don't know if that's a problem or not but I wonder if mast placement is something of a experimentation process for ideal balance.

Whatever sailrig you get you need a real rudder, not a kayak rudder. If the sail is 50sqft. you need 1.5% of that area in a rudder..so that's .75sqft. IN THE WATER. Imagine a 9"x12" rudder below the waterline. The average double sea kayak rudder will be about less than a third of that.
