I think the life of my temporary very thin clear PVC skin is going to be determined not by the number of hours on the water, but by the number of times I step into the kayak.

In spite of my best efforts to wash the sand off my feet as I get in, a little bit has found its way into the kayak. The problem then is that it migrates in between the keel stringer and the skin.

Because the skin is so thin, if the kayak sits on a fairly hard surface, the sand and grit between the skin and the keel tend to put pinholes in the skin.

I suppose one solution to this problem is to use a sea sock.

I wonder whether a very thin layer of medium density foam between the keel and the skin would reduce the tendency for the sand to push through the skin from the inside. Has anyone tried that?

How much of a problem is this when a sensible thickness of skin is used? Does it just deform enough that the sand doesn't damage it?
