I did some research & it seems that V5.12 WebBBS (what this forum uses now) stopped development back in 2002. Back in those days spam management wasn't the issue it is now, so limited management was provided.

In the years following, BBS's like phpBB really shot ahead.

In 2006 a new development team, unrelated to the original author, started working on their own version called 'Tetra-WebBBS', and from what I can read the latest version 5.33 has better features to handle nuisance posts.

I believe our forum admin team have 2 options...

1).. Abandon WebBBS & go over to a different forum software that does have spam filtering abilities. Existing posts may be able to be transferred to the new forum, otherwise this current forum is closed to new posts & is offered as a link off the new forum so the vast knowledge contained in the posts aren't lost to humanity.

2).. Stick with webBBS & upgrade it to the new Tetra-WebBBS. No posts should be lost.

In my opinion option 2) is the simplest but it will require a bit of time & work by the admin team to make it happen.

Logging & blacklisting IP's doesn't really work 'coz a lot of user IP's are dynamic, ie constantly changing, and I don't believe CAPTCHA-style user filtering is offered with the version of WebBBS being used now.

Regards,

Phil.

: ...like by IP address? It's nice that the spam is so obvious, but the number
: of posts by adeana, adara, adebisi, etc. with characteristic vdRwJQHoxLR
: *LINK* garbage in the titles has gotten ridiculous.
