I've used Padauk on the "wall" of a hatch recess (for a kajaksport or a
ValleyCP hatch) which means glassing over a sharpish corner. Had no problem
with adhesion to the Padauk. I've used both Maple and Padauk on Canadian
Canoe paddle handles - epoxy coated but not glassed, and take quite a bit of
wear from gripping - no adhesion problems there either.

... rats, I don't seem to have a photo of either of those handles, which is
odd as I was quite pleased with them ... need to go and take some !

As long as you use a flat sanding board and don't just hand sand with paper
or a soft pad you shouldn't erode the softer wood - get the finish as smooth
as possible by block plane. This will be a little harder to do on a pitch
deck with a flat facet than on a curved surface, but equally, there should
be fewer steps to remove where strips meet...
