: I have never had a tab open "behind" another tab. When you open a
: new tab, it shows up in the tab bar.

Yes the actual tab is visible, but the content of that web page isn't,
which is what I think of as "a tab" - a page full of content that I want
to be able to see at the same time as the page I've just come from, and
which I might like to move to a different desktop, which isn't possible
if it is in the same window. Options for middle button say, for instance,
"open in new tab" so clearly the browser designers think of a "tab" as
being the whole page content, not just the little bit that pokes up in the
tab bar...

Do any of these browsers have a "promote tab to new window" method ? That
might be the only way to render them usable. Otherwise I find that the way
I end up using Firefox is to click middle button on a link, wonder for a
moment where my page is, swear profusely, close the tab, right click to get
a menu and choose "open in new window" - that's a lot more operations than
in Konqueror where I just middle click and look at my new page, perhaps
shifting it across the desktop so I can see the page I linked from too...

My point is that if you are used to one idiom the other is either confusing
or intensely irritating. It doesn't matter which is which - clearly for a
lot of people it is the other idiom which is their preference. Swapping
from one browser to another may (by default) involve a change of idiom and
this can be a major disincentive to swap. I only use Firefox if I absolutely
have to to make a site work - it is so much more resource hungry than the
lightweight browsers which also happen to default to the idiom I prefer - but
could be configured to use tabs if I wanted to.
