Firefox has this awful "feature" called tabbed browsing. What is probably
happening is that it is opening the new message, but in a new tab that
stays hidden behind the one you are viewing. Because the screen is redrawn
to accomaodate the little tab bar, it looks as though your current page is
being refreshed.

You need to go into the difficult to find configuration screen (you don't
get to it through a menu as you'd expect, but type a special URL into the
location bar - I have to use google to find out how to do this every time
since it is totally unmemorable - maybe I should bookmark the config
screen...) and make it so that tabbed browsing is disabled, and new pages
open in a new window, not a new tab. It's a pain, but once it's done,
Firefox is a fairly good browser if you have plenty of memory. Not as good
as nice lightweight browsers, but a whole lot better than any piece of
software Microsoft ever produced... My advice - get rid of Windows :-)
