I would never trust a aluminum pop rivet with my life. The weight saved is so small. My soft pad eye held with me holding on for a hour in breaking waves with a flooded kayak being blown to the beach at 1.5 knots. You need to have respect for the water, If you are building a race kayak that will be haveing support, ultralight is fine, but a true sea kayak must handle things we cannot forsee.
