I finally got around to putting deck to hull. As I expected,
I too had a deck that was wider than the hull - about 3/8" per
side in the worst cases. I tried stitching but it didn't do
as well as I had hoped - there just wasn't that much flex in the
hull, and the stitches couldn't hold tight enough to keep things
in line under tension. Then I tried a stick as a spreader. That
worked in a small area, but I had bulges where the sticks were.
I finally pulled the spreaders out, left the stitches in with
1/4" to 3/8" overhand in places, and epoxied the two together.
In fact it made the epoxying pretty easy - I flipped the boat
deck side down and had sort of a channel to put the thickened
epoxy in.
Today I went out to trim the overhang. My first thought was a
belt sander, but I very quickly changed my mind - too slow and
too much sawdust. I reached instead for a bench plane. In less
than half an hour I had the overhang trimmed away with maybe
a 1/16" of an inch left. Much quicker than the belt sander, and
the shavings are easier to clean up than saw dust. I'll use the
belt sander on the last 1/16" to get a nice smooth transition.
Then glass tape and it's done! Well, I still need a seat, bulkheads,
footrests, a paddle... Almost done.
