I'm also a first time builder, and getting close to the point where I'll be attaching deck to hull. I'm pretty sure the deck is wider than the hull at this point. My plan is to assemble that joint pretty much like the others - wire the joint together, epoxy between the wires, then when that epoxy is hardened I'll pull the wires and fillet the rest of the joint. Then I'll be able to put on glass tape inside and out.
Don't know that this is the best way, or the "right" way, or even if it's going to work, but at this point that's what I'm planning. Maybe it'd work for you too.
