Kurt,
Yes, the seat looks a bit uncomfortable but that is an optical illusion.
Almost every part of your body is breathing and sometimes sweating. A tight plastic or foamy seat do not allow the moisture to evaporate. Yesterday I took the paddling premier among the ice. For safety reason I took my 7mm lined neopren semidry-wetsuit that is capable to keep me in icy water for a long time. It is tight and after 10-20 paddlestrokes I had to rest not to be overheated. I was paddling for about half an hour and when getting out from the wetsuit it was very damp or wet inside. The skin was on certain par ts whiteish and full of shrinkles. This is the same that happens to my butt when sitting on a tight plastic or foamy seat. NO ventilation, the skin and tissues underneath is almost soaked up. That is what I call a buttkiller!
The wooden seat is open and lets the moisture evaporate. Any water leaking does not stay in any foam or fabric. You can lever the thigh support to your best comfort, or if you want a long or short support. The seats I make is very comfortable to me and appears to be so for many others too. All builders in the study circle will build this seat. That makes 8 seats to different bodies and butts. And if I sometime want a little softer seat I put in a piece of foam 10mm under the butt.
I can´t show any pictures right now, wait until tomorrow and there will be both pictures and plan for the comfortable, cheap and wooden seat on my site and here. It´s very easy to build, you can use scrap strips and pieces, so you can try it and give it a chance. I can´t guarantee that it will suit everybody but it´s worth a try.
