Skin-on-Frame: Howcum question from utter neophyte

I've never built a boat (am contemplating it in a cold-feet sort of way) but I am curious--has anyone made a skin-on-frame kayak and then fiberglassed it instead of painting it? I assume that once the primary skin was glassed one could add more layers of cloth and resin until the boat was as stout as one wanted. Of course it would be rigid instead of 'live' but wouldn't it also be quite maintenance-free?

Just an idle question from a newbie...
