Check out Charles Walbridge's book the "Boatbuilders Manual". In it he states that a fiberglass only boat is too brittle and the use of nylon and or CAP polyester in the layup is preferable. It also goes into the use of kevlar and other layups.
The book was recomended to me from many on the board and sounds like it just what you need.
