: Blue, blue, blue. They're blue! Don't confuse them with the red ones! Anyway,
: the same problem is there - they are the same cans, just a different
: color! The best method for filling that almost works is with a funnel. Of
: course, you will spill kero - you have to put that funnel somewhere and
: not all of the kero will be off of it...

Well, not exactly.

There are cans with pumps made specifically for filling kerosene space heaters. They don't require the can to be tipped and the hose fits into the filler hole in the heater, no funnel is necessary. Using a large can with a standard "gas can" nozzle doesn't work well, as you discovered. The only use I have for a "blue can" is to add a few gallons of kero to my 275 gallon storage tank when it's running low and I need a little to get me through.

I almost hate to point this out, but every kero heater I've seen comes plastered with warning labels telling you to let it cool before filling. As you discovered, there's a good reason for this.

I really don't mean to give you a hard time, as you've certainly suffered enough. I just want to point out that kero heaters are perfectly safe if they're filled and used properly. I've done so for 25+ years without a mishap.
