: Hi guys.

: Wondering the usability and usefulness on the two part polyurethane
: (Interthane Plus) clear stuff that's UV protected. Is that a product that
: must be reacoated every year - does it feather in to the old coat without
: a lot of fuss?

: OR

: Do you guys recommend just using the standard UV varnish every couple years
: and live with the minor scratches. It's a kayak that's going to be used
: for cryin out loud so I'm not too worried about minor scratches.

: I'm also wondering if the two part polyurethane is tough enough to stand up
: to grounding/beaching the kayak - more so that the varnish. I've noticed a
: few of the builders here add a layer of 'glass to the wear spots but I'm
: wondering if the two part polyurethane would be enough to not have to do
: that.

: Thanks all!

I'm varnishing with the two part Interlux Perfection Varnish. The West Marine salesman verified with the Interlux tech person that this is in fact the Interlux Plus clear renamed and packaged. I like the gloss I am getting with the product. I have been thinning it with their recommended thinner although the can says to use full strength. I wonder if the cooler temps have made the product not flow as well? I have two coats on the deck of the kayak and I haven't had any problems with it hardening in a couple hours in approximately 40-50 degree temps. A respirator is a must as the fumes are terrible. I tried the System 3 waterbased LPU and didn't like its matte finish. It was easy enough to apply, but I found the finish to be hazy. I sanded it off and applied the Perfection Varnish. In the past I used Helmsman Spar Urethane with good results, but the abrasion resistance is nothing to brag about.
