Skin-on-Frame: What's In A Pump ?

Yoyageurs,

My next crappy challenge is to try and make my own hand bilge pump.
Those hand pumps seem to have a membrane inside, that has a pinhole.
With all the pvc and alu leftover tubes that stand in my way, perhaps I should be able to glue out sthg.
Also, do you turn the exhaust pipe end overboard over the coaming, or do you run it thru some hole in the hull, at a lower level?
I hold nothing against electrical pumps, but most have a low capacity.
