: On my next boat, I am considering putting a light glass on the inside of the
: pieces and under the deck before I stitch it together. Then stitching,
: putting in fillets and tape wide enough to overlap the glass on the inside
: side pieces and bottom. I am assuming the overlap will have similar
: strength as one piece but be easier to do.
: Outside glass will be the usual continuous single pieces with reinforcement
: on wear areas.
: Has anyone done this? Is my thinking sound?
: Thanks. Randy
I think that by applying cloth and resin to one or both sides, and I'm assuming this would be done on a flat surface, and then stitching the individual components together would then not only pre-stress the plywood, but also the layers of epoxy/fibreglass, tension on the exterior and/or compression on the interior surfaces. My thinking here is that by effectively "binding" the surface laminations of marine plywood and then subjecting the pieces to convex or concave curves of hull construction, you would then stress the plywood laminations within the plywood itself beyond the stresses found in conventional construction. While this would still produce a stiff and strong hull, I believe that resiliency in terms of energy that could be absorbed from an impact would be compromised. The larger the curve or vessel, the larger the compromise.
Any other thoughts on my ramblings?
