: . . . The only disadvantage with bulkhead hatches is I
: sometimes have to lift the end of the kayak and shake it to get stowed
: stuff to move to the hatch.

The simple solution is a metal ring or pulley mounted at the end of the boat, inside your storage area, and a length of rope which goes thru the pulley or ring.

Tie an end on your rope to the leading edge of your gear bag and pull on the other end of the rope, dragging it through the pulley. Just before the gear bag disappears into the hatch, tie a shorter rope to the traling end of the gearbag. You'll use this to pull the bag out. Another few tugs on the rope attached to the end of the boat and your gear is stowed all the way at the end, with a rope tail which is easily reached from your cockpit hatch.

Since your boat is already finsihed there will be some difficulty in attaching the ring or pulley, but it can be worth the effort. Be imaginative. A broomstick, some epoxy and some scraps of glass cloth should be all you'll need, in addition to the ring or pulley of course. One hint: Put the rope through the pulley before you mount the pulley.

Hope this helps.
