Hi Sage

Well, you are probably looking in the right place, but I wish you good luck. I have talked to dealers here in Fresno and on the coast to no avail. They all say the same thing. The wood comes in by shiploads and is already sold before it hits the dock, with little exception. They all go there and have to bid on what's left over and the price goes way up. Plus, they seldom come away with any really good stock. I've seen the wood the dealers in our area come back with and it's all short and the grain is wavey. Darn near useless for what we need. I have yet to see a piece with verticle grain or over 6' long.

Hope you do better than I. Maybe down there where it comes in off the ships you will have better luck. ??

I'm starting a combination "Morris & Starr" boat this month and after a trip to Jackel Ent., about a month ago, I am going to decide on either their WRC or AYC. Both in plentiful stock and very clear and verticle grained. They also have a ton of Sugar Pine in 2"x - stock that is clear and very straight grained. All a bit pricy, but being that it's verticle grain and clear, it's very much worth the price.

The Sitka would be nice, but hardly worth the price for what you get.

Of course there's the weight factor, but the WRC is fairly near the same weight and would make little to no difference in the boats total weight. Alaskan Yellow Cedar is a bit heavier than both, but again, I doubt it would add 3 to 4 lbs to the boats total weight.

Are you building a S o F boat or stripper? With less than a month.. I'd would guess, the S o F.

I think Morris and Starr both are using pine or at least suggest it for the majority for their stringers and beams, then a good bending wood for the ribs.
I've already picked out some Ash for that.

Good Luck on the search! Look forward to seeing your progress on the Baidarka.
