This is a better view of the flag insert and cockpit. The flag is WRC and the light bars are aspen. Its stripped in using 1/4 inch square strips, 6-1/2 inches long. After trying many techniques to get pieces in place, I found an easy way that might be useful for other designs. I assembled the flag on a bench and set up a jig contraption to hold it securely in place. I then ran lines of hot melt glue acorss the top perpendicular to the strips. After it cooled, I took the whole unit out and found it held together really well. I then was able to bend the unit to expose the edges of the strips and I painted epoxy between each strips. The whole flag was then put in place next to an upper strip and the forward flush edge. There was a form at the center of the flag and the next strip below held it all in place. Several people who have seen the boat at the launch said they thought it was a sticker.
I wanted the cockpit to be the same deminsions as my Arctic Tern, so I could use the same spray skirt. I purchased the plywood coming from Pygmy and epoxyed it the the recess. The lip was made by first stapeling 2 inch aspen pieces in place on the coming piece with wax paper in between. The brown WRC pieces were then cut and sanded to fit tight and glued in place. After the glue dried, I removed the whole unit and fiberglassed the bottom with 5 ounce cloth. After it cured, I used epoxy, thickened with wood flour to glue it to the coming. Another layer of cloth was then put on top. It is a very solid arrangement. I'm not easy on my kayaks and it has held up very well.
