i used a 1" oak dowel, from home depot. i wasn't considering rigging it to be reefable. i wanted it to be as simple as possible. without a rudder on the boat you have to use your paddle for steering so you don't have your hands free to run the rigging. and less is always better, anyway. all that said, it could be rigged with a pulley at the mast tip, and another at the base, as well as another cam-cleat at the cockpit.
