I don't know how much time you have, but you'd get a lot of information by searching back about a year ago under the name George Roberts. He's an abrasive guy who was the only person to have abused this BBS's rules so much that he was barred from it. Following an unsuccesful libel lawsuit against this site, he removed all of his technical data from his own website in a "fine--I'll-take-my-marbles-and-play-elsewhere" attitude. Search back about a year ago under the name George Roberts and you'll find some information on his lightweight, strong layups of 1/8" wood, 4-oz. satin-weave cloth, and 5-oz. satin Kevlar. (in the process you'll also find more than a few insults as well)

Another option would be a kayak trailer to wheel your kayak down to the water easier, and roof-rack extenders which make it possible to lift first the bow of the boat up to the rack, then lift the stern up.

: Hi, all-I'm getting ready to build my first stripper and need some input
: regarding glass layup. Ain't getting any younger, as the back and joints
: occasionally remind me, so light weight is a major consideration, but
: would like the boat to be sturdy. I'll be using 3/16" strips,
: northern white cedar; my question is: assuming an efficient use of resin,
: should I use one layer of 6 oz. glass, or two layers of 4 oz. glass
: (inside and out)? How do the two compare regarding weight, strength and
: abrasion resistance? Thanks in advance, Greg

Add glass inside first, then outside.
