Hi Bill and Jeff,
I haven't seen the numbers of Jeff's design but from the picture posted, the proportions look good. The flare from chine to gunwale looks like it would give nice secondary stability for carved turns. If the sides were too vertical, secondary stability suffers making it more difficult to stay upright when carve-turning.
Another benefit of flaring sides above the waterline is cargo capacity. A vertical sided kayak gives a near linear increase in displacement with extra cargo, flared sides give a more scalar increase.
Cargo ships have vertical sides because they are designed to operate best at maximum displacement as the norm. Small boats and kayaks often have comparitively larger variances in cargo weight, having flared sides minimises the change in performance with various displacements.
