While this is certainly possible depending on the paddle design and technique you use, it's not a given. If you were getting a lot of slippage, you probably weren't using the canted technique, which DRAMATICALLY increases the bite of the paddle. When you're new with the GP, you're not likely to know about this technique. It's easy to learn once you understand it, as it uses the natural angle of the wrist to orient the paddle. It works best with a shouldered paddle.

You can also make the paddle blades longer or wider to increase bite. In the latter case, going too wide eliminates the ability to slide the paddle easily.
