Hi Ron,
Go for it. If it works anything like cedar, it'll be grand. I wouldn't worry about durability by traditional reasoning, it will be encapsulated in epoxy.

If it's still in the round, or being slabbed green, let it dry well before dimensioning it, it shrinks noticably when drying.

The colour is a bit bland but it would make a good background for inlays, etc.
If you deep stain it, you could have pretty much any colour you want. Wine-red is a good colour, :) a glassful makes a nice, large, pale red patch that soaked in at least 2mm deep. (wasn't me, I don't spill wine)

Use sharp, sharp tools when working it.
