I have never done it. But I have come across folks who have and were satisfied with the result. It is light and soft and works easily.
Basswood is the woodcarvers dream wood. All those classic merry-go-round animals were and still are carved from basswood. But basswood is whitish and very bland looking. I don't recall it ever being used in traditional boatbuilding so it is probably rot prone. I believe it is readily available in long clear lenths.
