Hey Guy,

It sounds like you've done some research. Instead of planing the boat for that initial step in fairing, you could always use a belt sander. It's not as agressive as it sounds, you just have to keep the edge of the belt from digging in. Then again, with a plane there's always the issue with tear-out. If you do use a belt sander, try to use one that collects the dust.

If the weight is comparable to cedar, it would certainly be a good choice; Bamboo is quite hard.
