The way I do it is completely not traditional and used 1/4 elastic cord (which many people hate). I drill a hole in the gunwals and thread a loop of paracord and tie a knot on the inside of the gunwals. Each loop is one attachment point. While the boat is getting skinned I poke the paracord through the skin without making a hole (the weave in the skin separates enough to allow it through). To do this I loop some sinew through the paracord loop and then use the sinew with a needle to poke it through where it will end up when done skinning and then use the sinew lead to poke the paracord through. Cape Falcon Kayak's technique of pre-lacing the skin on is neccessary to get the placement correct. It all gets sealed when coating the skin.
The grab loops are just a peice of paracord through a hole running all the way through both gunwalls that is tied into a loop. To finnish my rigging I made some slings that fit inside the elastic to hold things like a full size nalgene in the front. Sewing is required to make the slings.
It works for me because I prefer elastic and don't want to melt holes in the skin. Unfortunately, this technique only works if you plan before you skin, which may be to late for you boat.
