The standard text for strip canoe building is "Canoecraft" by Ted Moores. Moores is much more of a craftsman than Gilpatric and the designs Moores offers are well known classic hulls like "Redbird", "Peterborough" and "Chestnut Prospector". Do yourself a favor and check out a copy of "Canoecraft" before you make any decisions. The only drawback to Moores book is there are no patterns. You have to work from a table of offsets.
The grandaddy of strip building books is "The Stripper's Guide to Canoe Building" by David Hazen. I've heard a well known canoe expert praise Hazen's design called "Micmac". Hazen's book includes fill size patterns which are worth whatever the book costs.

: I want to build my dad a boat. I dont think he would want to try to get in a
: kayak. He grew up with canoes and Hed like to keep it that way. I have a
: book "building a strip canoe" by Gil Gilpatrick. Im thinking
: about the river runner or the white Guide. any thoughts?
