Strip: what canoe to build?

I want to build my dad a boat. I dont think he would want to try to get in a kayak. He grew up with canoes and Hed like to keep it that way. I have a book "building a strip canoe" by Gil Gilpatrick. Im thinking about the river runner or the white Guide. any thoughts?
