Is this the Aquarail project you were telling me about? Aubergine... Hehe... sounds fun. Unless you want the woodgrain to show why not just paint it? Most manufactures should be able to mix just about any color you want. If you want the woodgrain, dye the wood and then epoxy over it.

BTW: When are you planning on posting finished pictures of your Guillemot? I know you're close!
