Tony,
I use a Canon 20 D with a very long 500mm lens. I do put the camera and lens in a dry bag made for a Thermarest during launch, landing, or when winds pick up. Most of the time I just hang it from the lens foot (I have an extended foot plate for a Wimberly Mount)on the front of the cockpit so the lens extends under the deck. I do carry a small pad to keep it off the bottom of the boat when I place it there and I have been known to carry it under deck bungies also.
