Off Topic: Green Lasers?

OK, just saw this segment on the news about green lasers being pointed at aircraft and terrorists and all that.

Nuisance usage aside, I wonder if green lasers have any place as a signaling device for us kayakers.

I've of course had a red laser pointer to play around with, and had not heard of the green beams before now, but apparently the beam itself is visible in darkness for over a mile. I can't help but think that such a pointer would function as a "static flare" at night on the sea. Since the beam is visible, it would point right to it's source.

Course, you wouldn't want to blind your rescuers.

Thoughts?
