An interesting debate.

Unless I'm missing something, it is the smoothness of the final finish, the varnish, that determines the friction of the surface. The carbon/epoxy compound is not in contact with the water at all.

I would also think, based on my own fluid dynamics studies, that any advantage would be most evident in stillwater conditions. In moving seas there is just so much going on at the hull/water boundary that any difference would be negligible.

But like many things, such as the perceived stability of any given kayak design, it is massively subjective and subtle, and anything that gives more confidence to our paddling ambitions does not need quantifying.
