How about removing the wire and plugging the holes with "Kanzlerized" tooth picks, if you like detail work. The Kanzlering process involves soaking in RIT Dye and water some unspecified amount of time. Then just sand flush while preparing hull for glassing. Use contrast to emphasize, match to minimize.
