Do you want to cover the flub for cosmetic reasons or are you worried about strength. Cosmetically, most people will not notice. Yes, it will always bother you, but covering it with a veneer may just attract attention to the mistake. Structurally, fill the gap with thickened epoxy and add some extra glass to the area and you should be all set.
