The Wooden Canoe Heritiage Association may be able to point you toward more information on kayaks, even though it is not their main area of research.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington has been involved with researching kayak history. A lot of their material is supposed to be online. You might try searching their web site. Best of luck to you. Paul Jacobson
